July 14 - Not so fast...

Max must really the like hospital and not want to go home yet.

Over the last couple of days, Max has been having increasing (albeit small) amounts of dried blood flecks in his spit up. No one was worried about it, especially since he had two different feeding tube insertions within the span of a few days. Also, there's been no blood in his diaper. The irritation of the tube insertions could easily cause some minor upper GI bleeding.

However last night there was a bit more blood than usual, and the nurse measured his abdominal girth at 2cm larger than recent readings. To be cautious, she called in the doctor to examine him. During the exam while the doctor was probing his abdomen, Max vomited a larger amount (5-10cc) of fresh blood which also had some clots. Dr. P ordered two x-rays and moved Monday morning's weekly blood work a few hours earlier. It was almost midnight by this time. I waited around until almost 2am for all of the results to come back and for Dr. P to evaluate the findings – nothing obviously wrong! Max' haematocrit was 36% and platelets were 31k. A bit lower that last week's, but not alarming.

Now that Monday is here, his regular physicians will consult and make a decision about keeping him in hospital for a while longer.

p.s. Happy Bastille Day to my friends in Nice.
