May 6

Today an X-ray was taken that revealed that the upper lobe of Max's right lung is collapsed. This is likely the reason for his higher CO₂ levels in his blood gas tests. They are considering putting him on a CPAP machine to help inflate the lung and to reduce the number of calories he's expending to breathe.

Melanie met with the Pediatric Neurologist today. His role is to assess Maxwell's long term prognosis due to the PVL related brain injury. He needs both a CAT scan and an MRI to be able to make a more detailed analysis. At this time, Max isn't strong enough to endure either procedure. However, he was able to allay some of our fears about our being told that 90% of children with PVL injury suffer permanent neurological problems. That 90% includes any potential symptom, including those as small as minor hearing or vision loss, or trivial coordination issues.
