August 21 - Otolaryngologist

The otolaryngologist (ENT: Ear/Nose/Throat) finally got to examine Max to evaluate his ABR test and to make recommendations on the best course of therapy and treatment for Max' deafness. He told us that we have two different approaches to consider. We can either raise Max as a deaf child or as a hearing child.

The first option involves eschewing any auditory protheses whatsoever and immersing Max in ASL. The second option involves fitting Max with a powerful inter-aural sound amplification device so that he would be able to perceive gross sound information through bone induction. This would keep the auditory cortex of his brain active (to prevent atrophy) until he is 12 months old, the minimum age approved by the FDA for cochlear implants.
