10:17 – This morning's blood gas shows CO2 is at 54%, still hovering in the same "high normal" range of 45%-55%. That's good because he's slowly being weaned off CPAP breathing assistance, but his blood gas isn't getting worse as he's doing more of his own breathing. His RRT just lowered his breathing rate to 0 (i.e. he's now not actively prompted to breath when he "forgets"), but he's still receiving constant CPAP pressure to keep the alveoli in his lungs open. He's also being given 27% oxygen (passive "room level" oxygen that you and I breathe is 21%). Hopefully, we're close to being off CPAP. The next phase would be to just have a nasal cannula delivering oxygen, but no CPAP assistance.
Bilirubin is now 9.8! Normal range for boys is 5-16, so that's great. For some reason he still appears jaundiced to both me and Melanie. We're not matching him against any Pantone color chart ;-), so our comment is merely subjective. Regardless, normal level bilirubin is an indicator of proper liver function.
10:27 – The 08:00 diaper change had no blood.
