May 25 - Afternoon

14:30 -- Now that my husband has freaked everyone out, let me clarify what happened last night and what has happened since then.

Last night's nurse had never cared for Max before this weekend; she doesn't know him or his [very short] health history. This alarmist/pessimistic type of care-giving has happened before and we must learn to sift through what are valid concerns and prognoses, and what is pure speculation. Just this week one of the night nurses expressed grim observations about Max' color and distended belly to the incoming day nurse S. (who reported it to me) and S. said she told her, "oh that's just Max. He always looks like that." And it's true, he does! If that night nurse had only seen him three weeks ago!

So of course, The Daddy Phoo had me so freaked out when he came home last night that I got up at 06:00 and went to the hospital. I met with Dr. R. when he made his morning rounds around 08:00. I asked him first about the petichiae which had Phoo so bothered. He totally shrugged it off saying that it's normal and expected for a child with such a low blood platelets count. Dr. R. said that Max looks really good and he had a good week. Today was Dr. R.'s last day as Max' doctor for awhile and he was careful to point out that although he saw Max coming off the ventilator this week, the next doctor could have a different viewpoint as far as what acceptable vent settings are before making the change.

SO THERE WE ARE.
